Zen Shiatsu

A Natural Extension of My Watsu Work

My work as a Watsu (Water Shiatsu) therapist has taught me how deeply the body responds when it is met with presence, gentleness and listening touch. In Zen Shiatsu I bring the same attentive listening, but now through a land-based form of treatment.

Where Watsu invites release in warm water, Shiatsu works through mindful pressure and touch on the body, inviting energy (Ki) to flow and balance to return.

What is Zen Shiatsu?

Zen Shiatsu is a Japanese holistic manual treatment that focuses on restoring balance in body, mind and spirit. With the hands, gentle pressure is applied along the meridians (energy channels) of the body. Stretches and mindful contact encourage energy to move more freely.

You lie fully clothed on a futon while the body receives relaxed pressure, subtle stretches and a level of presence you rarely encounter in daily life. Nothing is rubbed or kneaded (like in Western massage). Nothing is pushed into activation. Instead your system drops into parasympathetic state. Blood shifts inward. The body remembers how to reset.

Pressure like water

Using Shiatsu on the meridians to balance the energy is achieved by applying relaxed pressure. This pressure, that listens very closely, is the ultimate expression of "Dao". Soft and strong as water, permeating everything and without opposition from the body. The pressure applied in Shiatsu, whether from the thumbs, palms, elbows or knees, is perpendicular and maintained. It doesn’t invade. It listens so closely that the body cannot help but open.

From wave to ocean: A holistic approach

Most people think in terms of symptoms. It's what we see on the surface,"the wave". This is what Western medicine is focused on. But what if you could work with the ocean underneath? This is what Shiatsu does.
First there is energy (Ki), then there is form. When you understand the meridian system of the body, you see the deep pattern. You see why brain fog, fatigue and digestive discomfort can all point to the same meridian. You see the coherence behind the chaos.

Zen Shiatsu isn't about "fixing" something. Instead, it stimulates the body’s self-healing ability which opens the door to new clarity, resilience and presence in daily life.

Why Zen Shiatsu with Me

I am a certified Shiatsu massage therapist, currently finalizing my education to become a full Shiatsu therapist, which includes diagnostic skills and therapeutic application.

I'm trained in Amsterdam by Joyce Vlaarkamp, in the direct lineage of Zen Shiatsu founder Shizuto Masunaga. I have also received direct teachings from his son Haruhiko Masunaga.

My background in Watsu and my clairsentient sensitivity enrich my Shiatsu work. I listen with my hands, attuning not only to physical tension but also to the more subtle layers of your experience. Clients often describe my sessions as grounding, deeply attuned and nurturing.
